The Heroes of Today

The recent news of the dramatic rescue of 15 hostages from the Colombian Farc to include the highly political figure of Ingrid Betancourt and 3 Americans has touched the minds and souls of every Colombian as well as many others that witnessed the news.  As a native born Colombian I was drawn to the story of the day and felt compelled to hear every bit of news about this amazing feat.

What it is  I thought, that has me wanting to know more when I am usually not one to get into political issues of this kind. Yes, I had heard of her capture and the determination of her mother to not leave a stone unturned as to the release of her daughter. But nothing had touched me as the emotion that I felt  in the moment of watching the news.  I realized that what was occurring within myself and I magine every other Colombian both in Colombia and abroad is that we were witnessing the birth of a Hero.  But as I went through the day I realized this went beyond just Colombians.

President Uribe who had so determinedly stood up to the FARC said no more. It is the the eternal metaphor of good and evil, the Hero conquers the aggressor, but the beauty of this whole operation as I listened to his words was his message of peace and the intention of the military to carry out this mission with not an ounce of blood shed.  How courageous an act. A true Hero speaks. How courageous the act of the loving mother to go to all measures to insure the release of her daughter.  Love courage and faith in a Higher presence that determines all things is what has touched and perhaps transformed the lifes of many. And this is what the Hero’s Journey is all about.
