I know I said I would post the next day, but hey, I am still on vacation. I have been good to myself by not pressuring myself to do anything in particular. I have allowed this week to go with the flow.
On Tuesday, I had an appointment with a third veternarian as a final attempt to heal Sparky’s wound. The official diagnosis is Acral Lick Granuloma. He had a small wound that became a very big wound about six inches long. As you can see from the picture on the left here, he is not too thrilled that I am going to leave him here all day.
It becomes a compulsive licking that they end up going to the bone. I have been very distressed about it and finally with the help of this veternarian, he put on a cast. It is a temporary cast to see if he will not chew it off. They are dermotological specialist. I am thankful that my brother referred me to them.
Today is now Thursday and so far so good. Sparky usually sleeps in my room. The night that we went to the vet, he refused to go to my room. I think he wanted to be out of sight to try to take the cast off during the night. But he didn’t succeed! It is only partially chewed. So hopefully this long drama can finally come to an end and his now, obsessive compulsive disorder can be under control.
My dog has an addiction. By nature he is a hunter dog. By being bored or not getting the right stimulation, the wound would continue to get worse. Right now he is calm. I think he realizes he cannot take this off like the million bandages before. I have to make sure that Cristian takes him out on walks to release any stress – vet’s order.
On this website is some information on this condition. I have to now buy him a special protective boot so he doesn’t chew on the cast.
