  • Why Would You Want to Lose 50 Pounds In One Day?

    two-buildings-under-construction-and-newI don’t understand how people advertise, “Lose 50 pounds in one day.”  It would be like having a meltdown instead of having the pounds melt away. Imagine  if that would really happen. One day you are used to seeing yourself in the mirror in a certain way and then suddenly, the next day you look like a different person. It is still you: your spirit and your soul. But the exterior, the physical has changed drastically in the period of 24 hours. 

     How do you reconcile with that when a sudden change occurs. I took this picture of the two buildings last week on Brickell Ave, the heart of downtown Miami’s financial center.  One building is under construction and the other one brand new and complete. It took years for the new building to get its beautiful look.  There was much work in the foundation and building of the interior wiring and plumbing before the mirrors on that building were erected.

     What happens is that in today’s society is that we want everything to happen so fast. Make a million overnight, win the lotto, lose 50 pounds, and find prince charming. All that is possible. But can you sustain it?  Some lotto winners lose it all eventually. You lose 20 pounds quickly on a fad diet and soon enough you gain it back. It is a constant oscillation. (more…)

    Some highlights of what President Obama said(in italics):

    Growth wasn’t real in the past years. What we need is real growth. 

    Break the pattern of everyone in Washington looking to blame others.

    The problems are not going to be resolved immediately. The key is for everyone to stay focused.

    Don’t put your money in your mattresses. Be prudent.

    What has built America is the confidence and faith in the future. The future is going to be bright for all of us if we all focus on this.

    The key point that stands out for me is about the pattern of blame needing to break.  To be able to move ahead we have to have the courage to make great change. And great change requires a focused mind with vision instead of bashing with blame. I do believe President Obama has a true desire for change as do all of us. The building has crumbled, so to say. Now the pieces have to be cleaned up and a new way of governing has to be established.

    The financial meldown was like the underground volcano that erupted this week. It was inevitable.

    This  live footage of the underwater volcano off the Tongan coast is incredible. Here you can see the power of nature in action. The immense force gives me a moment of pause.  What does this visual evoke in you? For me, it shows that all of life must be respected including our own individual lives.

  • Update on Sparky’s Wound..My Labrador

    sparky my labrador march 09Sparky’s paw still has an exposed wound. I have been taking many precautions and  care  in the past six months so it doesn’t get infected. However, he is over 100 pounds, very stubborn and refuses to let it heal with the bandage. This picture where I found a brace usually only lasts about a couple of hours. Then he maneuvers to take it off, when I am not looking.

    I am at my wits end. I am tired of yelling at him. I yo- yo between ignoring him and back to worrying about his paw. As I observed him the other day, I wondered if he is now used to the pain of this exposed wound. I know it must hurt him, even though he still walks normal yet with a slight limp.

    I finally had an idea the other day of maybe getting a cast on it, just like I had when I broke my bones.  My brother, Ricardo, who is a dermatologist sent pictures of  Sparky’s wound to a dermatological vet. He said that Sparky’s condition is an obsessive compulsive disorder.  The wound started because he scratched a groomer. What started as a small wound ended becoming bigger and bigger as he continuously licks it.  The vet says that this type of condition is very hard to get rid of and that some people have tried snake venom to prevent this.

    The problem is that it keeps getting bigger and bigger as time goes by. Isn’t this true with our own emotions? Don’t we sometimes suppress them again and again when a trigger causes us to react and suddenly we are exposed?  My own process  has been long and painful. At least I finally feel my heart is in a better place, stronger and ready to take the punches without a meltdown. I only hope Sparky heals soon.

  • A Hero in My Eyes

    I just saw the episode on Oprah of this woman who had to have her arms and legs amputated after an infection took over her body. Her attitude moved me to tears when I saw that what kept her together was her focus on her family.  She had just given birth to a daughter and wanted to go home after rehabiliation and  give her newborn daughter the attention she needed.

    These kind of stories make you pause and value what is really real and important in life.  What a real hero she is. It is beyond words.
