In an essay in the Wall Street Journal yesterday, Joe Queenan focuses on the human foibles of the people we consider heroes. This past month Alex Rodriguez and Michael Phelps had transgressions that surprised us. One of the things that Joe Queenan says so poignantly is that ” these men may have done a great public service….and if you want to send a message to your kids, send it yourself. Don’t expect celebrities to be role models. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB123456728548886075.html
Amen! That is a perfect statement! Kids learn best by example and the people who should serve as the best role models should be the parents or guardians of the children. Many people can serve as inspirational role models outside the home. This is necessary because many homes are broken. The children need hope to see that it is possible to rise above your circumstances. However, a parents biggest responsibility is to rise themselves above their own limitations and naturally be a great mirror for the children they bore.
Somestimes as adults we become cynical and tired of the negativity that is out there in the world. But in the end there is no place like home. Home is where the true heart is. And from here is where the next generation can experience and see a better world because they themselves will create it, hopefully.
My sister emailed me yesterday wanting me to send her some pictures of a day we went on a road trip to West Palm Beach in October, 2007. It was during that time that we worked together and started the vision for Resurrect Your Hero. We left at sunrise and I took some pictures along the way. Maybe she wanted to see all the pictures as a recall of a good memory to make her get going.
On the cover of today’s Miami Herald and Wall Street Journal is the admission of Alex Rodriguez use of steroids from 2001-2003. The admission came when a Sports Illustrated reporter told him he had tested positive back then. The information came out from a report that federal agents confiscated from a California laboratory. Alex says that at the time he “felt he needed a push to get him to the next level….and wanted to prove to everyone that I was worth being on the of the greatest players of all time.
